Expressive Protraits, painting, collage and gel printing. Aug. 30, 31

$0.00

Guest Artist Roya Hassas

In this two-day workshop, we’ll explore expressive portraiture through a combination of observational and abstract drawing and painting

Participants will learn foundational facial structure, then experiment with distortion, layering, and mixed media to capture mood. By the end, students will create a personal self-portrait that integrates realism, abstraction, and symbolism to tell their unique personal story.

Next we move on to gel printing. This is new for our studio. We are so excited to explore different new skill sets

Materials List:
Sketchbook or drawing paper, pencils, charcoal, erasers, pastels, ink, or any mixed media participants enjoy using, acrylic paints, brushes, palette for mixing, parchment paper, scissors and glue stick (for optional collage), reference photo(s) or a mirror for self-portrait. About Roya:

I am a painter deeply inspired by the human face as a mirror of our inner world. My work explores the emotional landscape that lives beneath the surface—those subtle expressions, gestures, and glances that speak volumes without a single word. Through portrait painting, I seek to capture presence rather than perfection, offering a glimpse into the quiet power of vulnerability, strength, and authenticity.
My approach blends figurative and abstract elements, allowing space for both emotion and interpretation. I often begin with a loose sketch or expressive mark, letting the painting evolve intuitively as I respond to what’s unfolding on the canvas. For me, it’s not just about recreating a likeness, but about honoring the story behind the face—the complexity, the contradictions, the humanity.
Portraits, to me, are not just visual representations; they are conversations. Each one invites the viewer to connect, reflect, and feel. As an artist, I’m endlessly fascinated by this exchange, and I carry that curiosity into every piece I create—and now into the studio space, where I look forward to sharing that process with others.

Using water-based clay for sculpture and mixed media in my paintings, I aim to reveal the raw and honest moments that define us as human beings. Whether it’s the joy behind a smile or the quiet weight in someone’s eyes, I believe every face tells a story worth sharing.5
